We are SC INBRE: Furman University

Meet Dallas Shuman, a senior neuroscience/psychology major at Furman University, working with Dr. Veronica Flores, SC INBRE Developmental Research Project Program (DRP) recipient

Recently, Shuman received a National Science Foundation (NSF) Scholarships in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (S-STEM). “Dallas, who has worked with Dr. Veronica Flores, has received support from SC INBRE for three successive summers (Year 1 as Furman INBRE Summer Scholar, Year 2 from Furman matching funds allocated to students who complete a second summer of research with the same INBRE mentor, and this past summer from Flores’s DRP), and is currently applying to graduate programs,” said Dr. John Wheeler, SC INBRE institution lead

“In addition to presenting at the SC INBRE Science Symposium (and being recognized with a first place presentation award in neuroscience in 2023), Dallas has presented at four national meetings including the S-STEM National Conference, Society for Neuroscience Annual Meeting,  Association for Chemreception Sciences and most recently ABRCMS, where she received a best presentation award in the neuroscience category.”

After she graduates in May with a degree in neuroscience, Shuman hopes to spend a post-baccalaureate year studying more neuroscience at the National Institutes of Health before pursuing a doctoral degree in neuroscience and studying neurodegenerative diseases, like Alzheimer’s.
