“I am INBRE” Spotlights
"Receiving the Developmental Research Project Program award has been very beneficial to my research program. It has supported summer research and provides opportunities for undergraduate students to work in my lab. In addition, SC INBRE funding has facilitated interactions with other lab head of PUIs across the state.”
Dr. Daniel Williams is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biology at Coastal Carolina University, where he has been since 2012. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Utah in 2005, which was followed by a postdoctoral fellowship at Yale University. Research in the Williams Lab is focused on the cellular mechanism and molecular pathways that underlie neurodegeneration triggered by reactive oxygen species. This is accomplished by using a novel optiogenetic approach for the temporal and spatial production of reactive oxygen species in neurons of the nematode C. elegans. Coastal Carolina University became an SC INBRE network institution in 2015 and Dr. Williams became Target Faculty shortly thereafter. Dr. Williams also teaches undergraduate courses in Introductory Biology, Genetics, and Neuroscience.
