John Wheeler
Dr. Wheeler is the Associate Provost for Integrative Science at Furman University, where he has also served as a Professor of Chemistry since 1991. A recipient of the South Carolina Governor’s Award for Excellence in Scientific Research at a Predominantly Undergraduate Institution in 2015, Wheeler served as the Interim Director of the SC EPSCoR/IDeA State Office from September 2015 to December 2016.
Wheeler has mentored >130 undergraduates and 17 M.S. students conducting research in bioanalytical chemistry. He has directed Furman’s INBRE program since 2005 and developed Furman’s Office of Integrative Research in the Sciences in 2008, where he has served as PI for >$8.5M in programmatic awards from NSF S-STEM, NSF RII, HHMI, Merck/AAAS and the Sherman Fairchild Foundation.
Wheeler has published 30 articles at Furman supported through grants from NSF, ACS-PRF, Research Corporation and the Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation, and has been named as a Project Kaleidoscope Faculty Member for the 21st Century and a Henry Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar. Wheeler was the recipient Furman’s Meritorious Advising Award in 2013, and has been previously selected as the Henry Keith and Ellen Hard Townes Professors of Chemistry. He and his wife, Dr. Sandy Wheeler, currently collaborate on research projects with faculty at Furman, Dr. Julia Brumaghim at Clemson University, and the FDA in Silver Spring, MD.
